Internet or Intranet-Based Networks, User Permissions, Hardware Configuration and Installation

A network is a group of two or more computers that intelligently share hardware or software devices with each other. Networks are divided into two types:

  1. Local Area Networks (LAN) is limited to an area. It is widely used to share resources and exchange information by connecting personal computers and workstations/hardware in company offices and factories by cable), fibre optic cabling or using a wireless connection.
  2. Wide Area Networks (WAN) consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs) that span a large geographic area across cities, states, or countries.

Internet or Intranet-Based Networks

The major difference between an intranet and the Internet is privacy:

  • An intranet is a private network accessible only to an organization’s staff. Typically, intranets comprise one or more LANs that are connected to other company networks, but as a rule, it is protected by a password and accessible only to employees or other authorized users.
  • The Internet is an open, public space, consisting of a conglomerate of networks, which is not actually owned by any individual or group. Using ISPs, it connects many smaller local area networks (LANs) or metro area networks (MANs). The choice of connecting businesses to the Internet varies depending on geographical location and service provider availability.

User Permissions

A permission set (also referred to as rights and privileges) is a collection of settings and permissions given to users by network administrators to grant them access to various tools and functions. It extends the users’ functional access rights to files on a network without changing their profiles.

Hardware Configuration and Installation

  • Installation

A system or program must be prepared for use – this is called the installation or setup process. Because the process varies for each program and each computer, programs (including operating systems) often come with an installer, a specialized program responsible for doing whatever is needed for their installation.

  • Configuration

The configuration affects system function and performance. It is an arrangement of functional units according to their nature, number and chief characteristics, such as the choice of hardware, software, firmware, settings, and documentation.
